At 16, Dedee Truitt (Christina Ricci) runs away from her troubled home to live with her half-brother Bill (Martin Donovan), a gay teacher in a small Indiana town. Left independently wealthy after the death of his lover, he is trying to resurrect his life with a new boyfriend, Matt (Ivan Sergei). An unusual love triangle is created when Dedee seduces Matt, and later reveals she's carrying his baby. Grand larceny, interstate flight and a sexual harassment scandal attract Sheriff Carl Tippett (Lyle Lovett), who meanwhile is falling for Lucia (Lisa Kudrow), Bill's best friend and ex's sister. As they all confront their sexuality and learn to let go of their traditional beliefs, they discover that what they all really want is what Dedee calls "the opposite of sex": lasting, committed and loving relationships.
