Maverick Chicago detective Eddie Jillette (Richard Gere) gets a tip that a couple is arriving from out of town looking for a hitman - and that the woman, Michel (Kim Basinger), is drop-dead gorgeous. Eddie poses as the hitman, but the operation goes south and his partner is brutally murdered. Following Michel back to New Orleans, Eddie soon learns she belongs to a shadowy figure named Losado (Jeroen Krabbé).
