The film cost $150m (£93m) to make but has struggled at the box office after receiving poor reviews.

Pan debuted at No.3 in the US box office charts. Ridley Scott's new movie The Martian, starring Matt Damon retains the top spot in the US, earning $37m, ahead of animated movie Hotel Trasylvannia 2 which took $20m (£12m).

Meanwhile Director Danny Boyle's new Steve Jobs biopic looks set to make a big impact at the box office after grossing nearly  $521,000 ($400,769) from its limited US release in just four theatres.

The figure makes for a venue average of $130,236 (£81,398), the best of the year so far. Only three other films have made more in pre-release - The Grand Budapest Hotel, American Sniper and Moonrise Kingdom.
