The Martian tops US box office

New Ridley Scott space movie The Martian has topped the US box office raking in $55m on its opening weekend.

The movie's earnings could top the previous record holder for an October opening - the George Clooney vehichle Gravity which earned $55.7m in its opening weekend.

The Martian stars Matt Damon as an astronaut left behind after a mission to the red planet goes wrong. He has no way to let his colleagues on earth know that he's still alive so he must learn to survive
on rations.

Last week's box office No.1, Hotel Transylvannia 2, earned $33m to take second place while the Emily Blunt vehicle, police thriller Sicario was in third place with takings of $12m.

Robert De Niro's new movie The Intern was in fourth place with takings of $11.6m while sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials earned $7.6m.
