Fantastic Four fails to top US box office

Fantastic Four

The latest Marvel superhero movie, Fantastic Four, opened to disappointing box office in the US this weekend taking just over $26m. The sum wasn't enough to topple Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation from the top spot, which took in $29m.

Last week the Fantastic Four director Josh Trank posted a disparaging tweet about the making of the movie which can't have helped at the box office.

He said: "A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would've received great reviews. You'll probably never see it. That's the reality though."

The Fantastic Four movie cost $120m to produce and has performed much worse than it's franchise predecessors.

2005's Fantastic Four opened with $56m and went on to earn $330m worldwide while 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer opened with $58m takings at the box office, going on to earn $287 worldwide.

New thriller The Gift, starring Jason Bateman came third in the US box office, taking in $12m. The film was made for just $5m.
