Angry Birds flies to top of US box office

The Angry Birds movie has flown to the top of the US box office. The movie, based on the best-selling app, took in $39m in its opening weekend, topping Captain America: Civil Warr off the top spot.

The film cost around $70m to make but has already taken in over $150m worldwide according to Sony Pictures. The movie features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride.

“It’s very difficult turning a video game property into a successful movie,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution. “To use a bad pun, we are flying high.”
